When cautious Emma Roberts goes to France to carry out research into 17th-century garden design, she finds a reliable diversion from her studies in her unlikely new friend Francoise Desnoyers, in whose beautiful house she is welcomed as a guest. She is not too dazzled to ignore the tensions that exist between Francoise and her formidable mother, or between Mme. Desnoyers and her other guests.
London recedes into the background as life in France becomes more significant in every respect. It is not until the horrifying episode that puts an end to this fascination that Emma is reconciled to her duller but safer life at home and to the compromises that she comes to accept.
Anita Brookner was born in south London in 1928, the daughter of a Polish immigrant family. She trained as an art historian, and worked at the Courtauld Institute of Art until her retirement in 1988. She published her first novel, A Start in Life, in 1981 and her 24th, Strangers, in 2009. As well as fiction, Anita Brookner has published a number of volumes of art criticism.

I love reading this book, and it's one of the very few books I keep and re-read because it's so dang enjoyable. I am from the Midwest and relate 100% to the things Keillor writes about. Characters in this book are people I grew up with - the fat aunt who "did't want to say anything" to make anyone mad but would fume in obvious silence - the old man with the Pioneer Seed Corn cap. The '66 Chevy that has just a few thousand mile on her. Sweet corn - garden grown tomatoes - butchering your own chicken - Lutheran pastors - the taverns, the weather, the kids in town. I read this book aloud (sometimes edited on the fly by me) to my kids when we went camping. One daughter wants the book for her own now and I must order the kindle edition for myself. I really love this book. I don't think it's for everyone but it is definitely for me because I know these people.Product details

Leaving Home (Audible Audio Edition) Anita Brookner Joanna David Audible Studios Books Reviews
great
Loved it!!!
Garrison Keillor is a master short story writer...unfortunately, publishers keep trying to turn him into a novelist. This is his BEST collection of stories. Wise, warm, and wonderful. A worthy successor to the string of small-town American writers.
This is very funny. The baritone voice echoes in my.mind... I always wondered, listening to A Prairie Home Companion, does he really make this stuff up as he goes? What an incredibly agile mind. Droll, ironic, insightful in the humor of these small town ... people. Germans and Norwegians .... not Irish, Germans and Italians as in my own Indiana home. Much larger than lake woebegon. A part of America that still exists? It saddens me to think that within my lifetime, Sunday stopped being a day where stores remained closed. Our wants became needs and one bread winner wasn't enough. Now, the NEW smirks up the entire internet in ... an hour ... each hour ... a new ebb and flow that sucks the inter-verse down like hotdish tunoodle casserole ... the chattering
GREAT HILARIOUS FUN BOOK THIS IS WHY I THINK HES THE BEST AT WRITTING HUMOR NOVEL AND SHORT STORIES I WILL KEEP BUYING HIS BOOK HOPEFULLY WILL KEEP WRITING THEM. GREAT FUN TO READ
Bought for my 90 yr old Mom. She has really enjoyed it.....is reading it for the second time already!!
I plan to read it next. Really Being Enjoyed!
Well, I knew of the Lake from the NPR show. Reading the stories just ain't the same. The stories tend to be 'downers'; a bit depressing, sad, despairing almost. Winding down, end of times, sunset, closing chapters. If you like this, great. If you like a giggle, listen to the show. The fun is in the delivery on NPR... not so much the strory itself.
