Romance writer Clara Winston dedicates her newest book to her cat, Puff, without knowing what havoc she is about to unloose on her placid (boring?) life. Because there’s a rogue CIA agent out there whose code name is Puff, and some very bad guys want to kill him. When the bad guys show up at mild-mannered Clara’s house, thinking that she can lead them to the man they’re hunting, she is rescued by that man, disgraced CIA agent Jack McClain. Jack is green-eyed, black-haired, infuriatingly macho—and every bit as sexy as the romantic heroes she’s always writing about. Clara hates him on sight, but if she wants to survive he is the only game in town. With Puff very reluctantly in tow, they go on the run for their lives, battling each other until the sizzling chemistry between them explodes into red-hot passion. This is a funny, romantic thrill-ride by the New York Times, USA Today and Publisher’s Weekly bestselling author that Romantic Times called “the mistress of sizzling sensuality.”

About the Author
Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve loved to write. My first book was a ten-page effort written at age five for my grandmother. Throughout grade school, high school and college I wrote for various school publications. When I was eighteen, my first professionally published piece—a humorous anecdote—appeared in Reader’s Digest. Still, it never occurred to me that I might become a professional writer. I aimed for a career as a lawyer and was actually in law school when I sold my first book. When that happened, the world lost a would-be lawyer and gained a writer. That book, which is still in print, is Island Flame, and it was published when I was twenty-four. Since then, I’ve written over forty books, which regularly appear on the New York Times, USA Today, and Publisher’s Weekly bestseller lists, among others. The mother of three sons, I read, I write, and I chauffeur children. That’s my life.

I usually like Karen Robards books for an easy read, but this one is pretty bad. Very predictable so far as the plot goes and totally unrealistic. What most offended my sensibilities, however, was the setting. Ms. Robards desperately needs a geography lesson. Last time I looked the ocean isn't too close to the hospitals in D.C. And the mountains west of Washington aren't in any reasonable distance to Hilton Head--or wherever the secret CIA camp was supposed to exist. I admit that I stopped following before that point.Product details

Night Magic edition by Karen Robards Romance eBooks Reviews
Karen Robards is one of my favorite authors. Over the years I have read many of her books. I found this one to be very good. The idea of a spy having the same undercover name as her cat was ingenious. Puff played one of the most important roles in the entire book. Having had several feline members of our family over the past forty years, I can relate. Puff had the personality of mine or two of our families cats. They are almost human in their knowledge of how far they can go. Loved the book.
Have enjoyed this author for years and perhaps that's why this was a bit of a disappointment...it's dated. Also, there was an unbelievable number of typos in the ebook version that detracted from the story. I'Lloyd still read Robards but will watch the copyright dates more carefully.
I'm a fan of Karen Robards and I've read a lot of her book. This book was just ok for me because of one reason. I really don't think this book was edited. There seemed to be a few errors every few pages which took away from the flow of the story for me. I'm usually not one to be really bothered by the editing but here it did. The story itself was great and so were the characters.
This book really surprised me. Not because it was a action/romance- I was expecting that- although- there seemed to be more action and less romance than I am used to- and that was okay- it was all good.
Things I liked- the humor involved with cat.. our Hero wasn't terribly fond of the cat, but he tolerated Puff (in the cute roll your eyes kind of way). I could see it in my head and it you felt like you were there. There is also a scene in which our h is uh- beat/hurt by bad men, and our H is rather helpless. Afterwards he takes great care of her and is so tender with her.
What I didn't like about the book was way she wrote some things towards the end. I mean, there is a HEA- so no fear there.. just I don't like the way our H acts before the HEA..
This book is obviously old and dated but interesting. My main complaint is that when it was converted from print to digital, no one bothered to edit it. It is full of annoying typos. You can figure them out, but they are still very irritating. If you are going to sell something, it should be a better product.
Karen Robards' writing conveys the most spot-on feminine sensibility of any romance writer. She is, to borrow a phrase, every woman. This book fell into the familiar plot of many of her suspense/chase books. Hapless heroine accidentally gets caught up in danger and intrigue, is dragged away by a fierce and formidable male himself on the run. He is exasperating and implacable, the basis of their conflict, but it soon becomes clear her safety depends on sticking with him as they are pursued by powerful and relentless forces out to kill them. As the book progresses toward the middle, he occasionally mellows a little, making her melt a bit toward him as she falls under his sexual spell. Why I couldn't give this book 5 stars--it's too much like many of her other books. And her penchant for creating a much too rough and brusque "hero" who the heroine wackily falls in love with strains my ability to identify with her. I can't buy falling in love with a guy who treats a woman badly to the point she succumbs to Stockholm Syndrome and falls in lust and love with him if he tosses her the smallest crumb. Her heroes just don't do it for me, much as I like her writing.
I love Karen Robards' books. I luckily discovered her first book, when it came out and have been a fan every since. I have Night Magic in my book library, but I couldn't find it, so I decided to buy the ebook version.
The story still held my attention, but the poor editing almost ruined my experience. Poor spell check, dialogues from two separate characters run together, questionable punctuation.
So, while I highly recommend Night Magic (5 stars), get it in paperback to have a truly enjoyable experience. This story has wonderfully developed characters, a taut and suspenseful plot, romance, and intelligent writing.
